CARSON, Calif. -- Marcelo Saragosa took part in training for the first time since joining Chivas USA on Thursday morning, but the Brazilian native is no stranger to Los Angeles. Chivas USA acquired Saragosa on July 17 in a trade with FC Dallas that sent Atiba Harris to Texas.

"I'm really happy to be here with Chivas and to be part of a group that's so strong," said Saragosa. "I love this city, my family loves this city, and I have a lot of friends from Brazil who live here. It's awesome."

One of those friends is Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura, with whom Saragosa is reuniting for the third time in his career. The two first were teammates in the youth system of Brazilian club São Paulo before both playing with the LA Galaxy during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Saragosa is delighted to be playing yet again with his old friend.

"Being with Paulo again after so many years is great," he said. "We have a great friendship, so it's good for us to [be back together.]"

Saragosa's career has taken him from São Paulo to Los Angeles and then on to Dallas in 2006 before finally arriving at Chivas USA. He has notched two goals and six assists during his six years in MLS.

"I bring a lot of experience to this team," said Saragosa. "I have played a long time in this league. I want to work with all my teammates to get into the playoffs and hopefully be champion."

Saragosa joins a Chivas USA squad that is currently tied for the fourth-best record in the league.

"Chivas is a very strong team," he said. "They've gotten some bad results recently but I believe they have a great team with very good players. We have to keep our heads up and continue working toward getting three points."

Saragosa could get his first minutes for the Red-and-White on August 8 when the team travels to Colorado. Chivas USA have already beaten the Rapids once this season, earning a 2-1 victory on March 21.

"I hope that we can get some good results and accomplish our ultimate goal, which is to win the league," said Saragosa.

"Marcelo is a talented and versatile player who gives us several options in midfield," said Chivas USA Head Coach Preki. "He has a lot of experience in both Brazil and MLS, and we look forward to having him in our squad."

"At the same time, we would like to thank Atiba Harris for his contributions to our club during the last two seasons," added Preki. "We wish him the best in this next stage of his career."

Born Jan. 22, 1982 in Campo Grande, Brazil, Marcelo Saragosa joined São Paulo FC at age 13 and played for nine years with the club, where his teammates included Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura and Brazilian international Kaká. A versatile midfielder who can play both centrally and on the outside of midfield, Saragosa joined MLS with the LA Galaxy in 2004, playing two and-a-half years before a trade sent him to FC Dallas in 2006. Saragosa, who possesses a U.S. green card and thus counts as a 'domestic' player for MLS roster purposes, has played a total of 94 games (80 starts), in six MLS seasons, registering two goals and six assists.

Atiba Harris, 24, was acquired by Chivas USA ahead of the 2008 MLS season, via a trade with Real Salt Lake. The St. Kitts & Nevis international made 42 appearances with the Red-and-White in one-and-a-half seasons, registering five goals and seven assists.
